Spent the day with my friend between the trenches in central Virginia. Nothing exciting, but we found quite a bit of lead including Gardners and Enfields. After the pic, read the sad tale . . .

Creek wash is constantly exposing more of the stumps in this area and my friend went back to a stump in which he had previously found a nice bullet in wood. Eight more inches of stump was visible, and he got a nice reading on his 70s era Nautilus. We saw where the bullet went in. he went back to the truck and brought his maul back intending to split the stump and take the artifact home for splitting. After 30 minutes, he about had it cut out, and he took a bad swing. Yep. CLEANLY cleaved the bullet in two! That's not the worst of it. Angry, he continued hunting and got a good reading in the black swamp muck. Many, many roots had him swinging his military digger rather swiftly. And . . . you guessed it. It was ANOTHER bullet in wood which he HIT and dislodged it, damaging the bullet and pulverizing the wood in the process! What are the odds? he probably shot about $60 right there. You may be able to see the cleaved bullet in picture 2 . . .

Confucius say he who swings carelessly with mual breaks bullet in two .... JK , but hey heck of a nice haul on the CW lead !!!!! Central Va you must be a neighbor where you located....?

Thanks Creskol - yeah, I'm very fortunate to have a place where the fighting was, and am thankful for every beat-up 3 ringer I can find! I guess I meant that I can't compete with the guys pulling buckles and plates and artillery shells! I live in the Northern Neck of Virginia, Ifoundit69. Was hunting around Richmond with a friend that day!

Great CW recoveries and great story. Man, that sucks! Keep those tools away from you buddy. :tongue3:
Nothing cooler than CW bullets in wood.
Good luck on future hunts.
