The Track-Way Site - Day 1...

Although we scouted this area last week, I'm calling this Day 1 as we started the grid today in earnest.
I'm very optimistic with our future grids based on how many buttons are still about.(plus bits of good sound Lead)
After 3 hours I had 1 Celtic Bronze Unit, a cloth seal, mystery thingy & a Medieval Lead Button.
He done it again and got another Sceat OTWBTTC. So he went from zero Sceats to 2 in 2 outing!

Yeap looks close enough, just waiting for the Museum response. I thought a Series D, not sure on type & variety.

Yeap took me over 20 years, or close to, to get my first one. My mate has been given a short cut with my years of knowledge tracking these things down.

They are tricky because if you do enough Roman Area's, your likely to get a Celtic Gold/Silver/Bronze, but in my experience all the 50+ Roman Sites I have mapped don't over-lap with the later middle-Saxon period. They tend to be some distance from them & have minimal or no cropmarks associated with them. Plus many of the middle-late Saxon Sites are now under modern Towns/Cities. You kind of need a bit of luck, or large scale gridding of promising looking areas.

how large an area do you hunt? What I am asking is, are you primarily in (mostly) a single historic area, (IE Kent or something similar). I wonder since your coin finds over time in a localized area would really tell an interesting story!

After my Dad moved away I slimmed down my permissions by over 50% in farm areas. I detect mostly within 1 County like the size of Kent. Yes, some of the Sites we have discovered have really filled a few holes in the Archaeological Record of the area.

The areas I have access to cover all sort of historical periods. Some guys in our group have found Saxon, I just never have. I've found Roman (bronze, silver), Celtic (gold), and all sorts of early English hammered coins though. My buddies have also found pieces of a gold torc. We're in a good area and have plenty of experience. It's just more a matter of luck at this point.
