Hi!

Hope I'm not violating any posting rules. Mods feel free to move/delete if I may not have two threads on one page.

So my hunting buddy has had some fine digs as of late, and we're having difficulty finding a maker or approximate year for a recently dug thimble. The top is a little crumbly. Possibly iron on top?

This gorgeous little thing came out of the backyard of an 1850's property a couple weeks back, in the suburbs of Philadelphia.

Can anyone ID?

Thanks!
HH
Brad

No idea on the hallmarks. Great finds! Congratulations.

Nice coins/silvers

Concerning your thimble. The mark to the left in the photo bears a vague resemblance to a post 1883 Austrian mark. Great finds!

My vote is pre-civil war, and hand engraved. BEAUTIFUL find!

I believe , from the style of the hallmarks (without referencing a book ) that you have late 1700's - early 1800's I'm guessing
1790- 1820 range - I also am seeing the engraving consistent with this time period - This is just a guess based on styles ,
Argentium.

Ebay once had a thimble marked:
'[h=1]1919 SWEDEN Signed GMG AB Sterling Silver Antique THIMBLE 16 mm diam Monogram[/h]'
No further information, unfortunately.
Don.....

Don, great research. We now know that it was made in Sweden, and the date code is "S7" aligning with a manufacturing date of 1920. I really thought this was older. I am sorry for the misleading first post, but it really looks much older than 1920.

edit:

**The sideways "mickey mouse head" is the National mark for Sweden.

**Still searching on G.M.G. AB makers mark.

**Also it was made in Skovde, Sweden.
---Do you see the "S", on the thimble? it is to the right side, but is upside down. Another is in the very center.

You folks are amazing. I'm astonished it doesn't date earlier than 20th century... Also considering the age of the site it was dug at, and also the fact that thimbles will often predate the sites they were dug at because they are past down from mother to daughter. (Or used to be....)

FoundInNC, I'll follow that post. Thank you!!

Brad

The rolled bottom or lipped edge dates it as a later one, the early ones didn't have these, as far as I'm aware.

The AB suffix after G.M.G. is equivalent to our Inc. or Ltd. if that helps....I believe it represents a corporation or similar entity, so G.M.G. would be the name of the company--whatever that is.

Nice Ring and Silver Thimble ...congrats !:icon_thumright:

I can't contribute any information as to date and all that; all I can say is that she's a beaut!

Love the thimble! Very nice and has some age also.
