That is awesome!!! to me it represents a sandhill crane, awesome find!!!!

thank you chong 2!!
thank you uniface!!
I agree about the crane effigy (it sure is not an eagle effigy)
the sand hill cranes fly north and south every year from canada to down into mexico or someplace and are prolific and are hunted in the mid west, (if you have a hunting license)
the whooping crane's head looks the same but is almost extinct (only less than 50 known to exist)
who knows when this could have been made
thanks, larson1951

Super find, congrats, any clue as to the type of bone?

Thanks

Come on, stop it already. You have got the most awsome place, its a museum. I can only dream of such finds. But I do appreciate you giving us the opportunity to see what great artifacts the native people left for us. Keep us wishing, hoping and hunting, please.... Thank You. JYD...

thanks again
I think it might be buffalo bone

Nice find Larson! Your posts open my eyes to non-flint artifacts. Thanks for posting.

Looks like a crane ,blue heron, sand hill or whooping. What a bout the pecker wood? They really liked to carve that bird. That is a great find musuem quality for sure. You must have a really nice WOW room. Thanks for sharing your really great find.

OK,yall, So why is this one NOT Banner material---am a newbie-so maybe am outside the '''loop''' but think this is such a once in a lifetime find---
Maybe the Mod can explain so I can better understand how things 'work'....

thanks fla-gal
I did not know how the banner system works
I was thinking the birds head was more scarce than the grooved celt
I am the first to admit that I do not know so much about this site or how the banner system works and such,
but the one thing I have learned is that this is a great site with so many wonderful people just waiting every day to share their knowledge
and appreciation for this sport and hobby and a great way to spend any time we can devote to preserving knowledge accumulated from studying the ways of life (by learning from the tools, toys, and ornaments they made) of our ancestors (in my case) or the previous people that lived on the same lands that we are now the temporary caretakers of.
thanks again, Larson1951

I've been watching this post for about 24 hours. I think I was one of the first ones to see it last night but couldn't reply because I couldn't find the words. I think this is one of the most amazing artifacts I have seen in my lifetime. I've seen some good ones in museums and this ranks right in there with those. This is museum quality and deserves to be on the banner. The detail and workmanship of this piece is extraordinary. I wish it could have been complete. Can you imagine what it looked like when it was first made?

This needs to be on the banner. I'm voting banner now.

Nice find Larson. :icon_thumright:

BANNER

Thanks for the banner vote it is appreciated

Museum quality. I keep coming back to see it. That's more than an effigy is a sculpted art.
Buffalo bone. Wow.

What about the complete one you posted a few months ago, with tallies and a handle. Do you think this piece is better than that one? I think it was under the topic " more cool bone pieces " or something?

37, I have seen only 4 of these
this one is twice as big as the rest of them
