Okay - my hopes aren't too high on this one, but here it is anyway.

This was found on the shore of Grand Lake, New Brunswick, which is a area fairly rich in artifacts (although nowhere close to the densities found in the mid-west US). I've read that New Brunswick, which is only 20% smaller than Maine, never had more than about 3000 individuals pre-contact. That's equivalent to an old village on the Mississippi. That said, there is a late archaic cemetery consisting of 60 burials (Cow Point) about a 15 minute drive away from where I found this.

The bedrock in the area is red clay shale without much harder stone around.

The piece seems to be pecked/pitted in certain areas, and there is also an area with parallel lines (next to my finger in the photo below). However, there is no difference in texture / wear at the business end.

It just seems to fit real nice in the palm of the hand....

I think it's one of those finds that you prob can't prove 100% but something most people would have kept. It has wear marks like it was a grinding / pecking stone but I have also seen nature make similar marks.

That excludes it from being an artifact....lol

Thanks arrow86. I'm not sure what to think about this one. The major thing for me is that, without any observable feature that would facilitate hafting, it is hard to see how something like this would be any more efficient than an un-worked stone.
