ARTIFACT RESTORATION. Please tell me what you think on this subject. All of the relics that I have are my own personal finds . I display them all for company to see. I used to pick up all the heartbreaker points and say "man why could'nt it have all been there". Anyone that artifact hunts knows this feeling very well. Since I display all of my pieces, I thought that I would like to have a case or two of my heartbreakers LOOKING like they could have. Artifact restoration can get very pricey so I thought I would give it a try myself. Do any of you do this also? Do you feel that it is O.K. or that it is wrong to do this? I am not out to fool anyone and the repairs are not permanant. I use molding clay and hobby paint . Far from a professional restoration , but thats not what I was after. I just want to be able to look at the display case and see what those heartbreakers were like at one time. Like I said I am not even close to a pro , just wanted them close. Saved myself a ton of money versus professional restoration. Well here are some pics of the stuff I have played around with. Tell me what you think and dont be afraid to bash me if you feel this is wrong to do. Thanks for hearing my ramble and hope you enjoy the pics.

Re: Give me your honest opinions!

Awesome job!!!! Your work would make the original makers of those points proud and your work shows the points in their true intended beauty and your display of them is stunning....well done!!!!

Bent twig, thank you for catching my attention!!! ;D i was going through my points the other day and came across a larger archaic that is broken. its my largest so far. i then remembered a post, "yours" and thought about it , and seems "seems" i can try to give it its whole appearence back to show others the size, but looks are decieving. you have done a great job on your pieces, and like you said, its not permenant, and it helps give others a idea what it looks like. whst brand of molding clay and hobby paint do you use?
here is a pic of what i would like to try to restore in my free time.
thanks

Chong,

It makes me happy to know that my work has inspired another to try this out. It was something that I thought I could not do , but just had to try. It is in no way permanent so if you dont like it ,just pop it right back off. The modeling clay came from Pat Katans, a craft shop.I threw away the packaging and keep it in a tupperware container. I am not sure what brand it is. The one thing I do know is that it was the only brand they had that was black in color. The paints I use also came from Pat Katans and the brand is called Studio 71. The main colors to get are white, black, brown, red, and orange. You will need a nice hobbie knife also. The clay cuts very well dry or wet. If you do any shaping before the clay is dry , you must leave it a little bulky. As it dries out it shrinks. It is really fun to do and makes you feel quite good when done. I am completely sure that if I can do it anyone can do it. Good luck, and I am sure you will do just fine. By the way, that is a perfect candidate for restoration. When you get it done make sure you let us see it. I also take modeling clay and form the broken pieces to see just what I need to do first.

Just saw your thread, Twig...nice work. I have a friend in Houston that restores brokes, (arrowheads) and makes replica arrows that he sells...He never does enough to them to make anyone think that they are the real thing, tho...It's a great way to show what they would have looked like in use...

hey twig, how did that Clovis base you were working on turn out?
