I was fortunate enough to run into an old campsite in the woods. Lots of targets and plenty of junk. 1869, 1870 and 1871 seated halfs were the only coins found. One was obviously in a fire of some sort.

The gun was found in the same area but I'm not sure if its from the same period. Any ideas on the gun? Is it real a toy or what? It seems to be too heavy to be a toy but I know very little about guns.

There was a lot of poison oak around and a week or so when the poison oak on my arms clears up I'll head back to see what else may be out there.

WELCOME some fantastic finds

Only three?!! Congrats on what would be the find of a lifetime for most people! - Jim

WOW ~ Very nice find! Especially in Oregon! We don't usually find such old coins here! The oldest coins I've dug in Oregon is an 1868 $10 gold coin & an 1868 half dime.

VERY NICE!!

Burned down cabin that had a cache inside? How close were the half dollars to each other? Go to all metal mode and listen for Gold! Small gold coins can ring up like aluminum.

Awesome finds there. I bet you cant wait to get back.

  nice pile, dont know about the gun.How does the barrel look like?

Wow, that's about as good of a first Tnet post as you can have!!!

Three seated halfs!! :o :o It's so strange that those were the only coins you could find. :icon_scratch:

Okay, I have one question...was this a site you extensively researched, or did you just stumble upon it by accident?

Welcome and Congrats!!

I think the A on the gun grip stands for Astra, the type of gun was not the same period as the coins. Probably not more than 20-40 years old, although company was founded in 1907, so it could be older. When you clean it you should be able to get the model, serial, or the caliber. Then run it down on line.

Do you have any idea how sweet of a hunt that it?
I've never found anything seated other than dimes.
It's Sh*t like this, that makes me wanna keep going out and breaking my back every free chance I get!
Congrats on the great seated halfs!

Great finds. I believe the gun is a toy because the slide is fixed. It is in the style of an automatic, yet there is no way for it to repeat. Still an awesome hunt, much better than anything I have ever found!!!! Congratulations and welcome to T-net!!!

I was out doing a test run on my ability to detect in hard rain since I'm going to England (Colchester) next month. Thinking I might find some brass shell casings (at the most) I was very, very surprised at these finds. It was only a 5 minute drive from where I live. I'd drive (or fly) hours for a potentially good place to detect so this was a complete shock to come across this site.

Hey, Winslow! Congrats!! It don't get much better than that!
HH! Dale

Congrats on an amazing spot!

looks like you found a great site. As for the gun, it looks like a cap pistol. You can see where the grip pivots open to load a roll of caps.

beautiful silver, awesome :wav: keep the dirt flying and the pics coming

Congrats!!!!!!!! CONGRATS!!!!!!!!
