Lisa, Terri and I went back to the old house site that we hunted last week.

The plan for today was to grid and dig everything above iron. And we did.
For all the 'old timers' here, you may remember the famous phrase from Jeff of PA: "Listen for the whisper". I did! ;D And it works! :D Only thing is, 99 percent of these 'older' coin finds were not reading like something I would normally dig. The sounds were 'whispers' but the readings were jumpy...anywhere from the 20's to 70's on all these. But since we had vowed to dig 'em, I did. Found all the wheats but two, and two of the mercs here. Also found the neatest Injun I've dug thus far. :) The site next door is the 'cache' site and we spent a few minutes over there. Not gridding, but did listen for the whisper and dug all above iron. Got one merc, two wheats, a blue police car, a bowling pin and bowling ball in the same hole :D and two buttons. I was really excited over the bigger button. Didn't have a clue what it had on it, but it was different that any I had dug before. The shank is different and it's a bit heavier than usual. Before leaving the site, I tried to wash some of the dirt off, but it's like that cement kinda dirt on it, and it doesn't want to come off. After getting home, I washed a bit more and am able to see the #4 and a swirly looking something at the top. Kinda reminds me of the buttons that Bird and Mike find/found in Europe?............. Anyone?

Wow Nana,

You girls are doing great. Yes, VDI's can and will be off at times. Depending on depth and the way the item is positioned in the ground. I've dug coins alot of the time and was totally surprized to see a indian or a deep silver. And not reading where they should be.

I dig every signal almost while I am out hunting. I've made some nice finds digging signals most TH wouldn't dig.

3 very nice-looking Mercs, great toys and relics! Even though it sounds like you did a 'scientific' and comprehensive search, I think I'd be going back there. Given the amount of stuff you got, there must be more.

Those 2 round tags I first thought might be 50's-style bicycle licenses. We'd get ours from either the police station or the fire station. But if there's no text to support the bike license idea, just the 3-digit number, umm, miner's tags or some other old 'take a number for better service' item?

Speaking of fire stations, if your old button isn't military, maybe it's Fire Company #4 or something like that.

Great stuff!

Nana, what great finds you came up with. Glad that you were able to get out.

Like the others said, go back and dig everything!

It looks like a good place to MD. WTG

Re: Three Silver, Fourteen Wheats, One Injun and a #4 Button

Hey Nana,

GREAT finds with your 3 silver day  Very cool injun and big button! I've been putting my buttons in boiling peroxide and cleaning with a cue-tip and peroxide. Works real well.

Re: Three Silver, Fourteen Wheats, One Injun and a #4 Button

Sweet group Nana. That place is really giving it up.

Nana,
I am no button pro, but I would guess that style shank is from the 1770's to 1815 era. Here are a few pictures I found in Albert's book of buttons. Yours could be a Continental Army button possibly?

Re: Three Silver, Fourteen Wheats, One Injun and a #4 Button

Thanks ya'll!!! :)

ED.... :o

WSDaddy...I'll try to keep up at the hunt. And for gosh sake, please don't make me try and keep up with you at the casino's this time around! :D

Nicky! That's toooo funny! :D Charlie coached one of my softball teams one year and that was our name! :D

Admiral....The two round tags are indeed miner's tags. :) And thanks for the info!

Joe....Somehow the word 'boiling' makes me a tad nervous! :P :D I've got it soaking in soapy water right now, but if that doesn't work in a day or two, I may try that method. :) Thanks!

MM.....Really? That old? :o Well...looking at those buttons, mine is a bit different, in that it has a swirly looking thing above the number, and those in the pic look flat...mine is shaped like a bowl? I did find another button there last week, and it was ID'd as post CW. And today I found another, right on top of the ground. Has wings and a propeller? The #4 button was the deepest item I have dug there. :)
I tried to take a better pic of the button. :)

The weeds are growing so rapidly! I think we'll have to wait till the mowers cut it before we can hunt there again. Still plenty of areas left to search, just can't get to 'em right now. :-\

Thanks again, ya'll! :)

Don't listen to Nick, he's still answering a question from yesterday. :o He knows pasta, pepperoni, and cooking aprons, but that's about it.
Oh yeah, CC tokens too. :tongue3:

Can you PLEASE post that "4" buton in the "what is it" section for the pros to ID? I'm dying to know now. ??? :icon_scratch:
Great find for sure. I say early 1800's.
