Went back today to an old house for two hours before church. Quickly found a mystery coin. Also found a small coin spill. Turns out that I found 3 silvers and my oldest neatest coin yet. The mystery coin is an 1840 braided hair large cent! The large silver is a walking liberty half dollar. Any advice on cleaning it?

Nice finds. I'd clean the silver with baking soda and water. Just rub it between your fingers. This will clean everything off.

The large cents are always a nice find.

It will also "clean off" any bit of monetary value whatsoever. I might do this with a common date coin, if it was really only worth silver value anyhow, but certainly not any old silver. I blast with water over a sink with the drain plug in, and use a camel's hair brush (while the water is running) to dab each side of the coin. I never field clean, because by the time I have scraped the dirt across the coin to see a date, I won't even know what I have destroyed (maybe a 1916-D merc!). If the silver is discolored, not a big deal. It is a dug coin, and that's the way it will stay.

NO, NO, NO!
Even if it's a common date, it's not good to get in that habit.
Eh, who am I kidding, I've done worse.
But I would just use warm water, in the beginning at least.
Nice coins, by the way!

Hey I'm from central PA where u located

I tend to go with all that say take it easy on cleaning it up.Running it under some water in the sink would work for me on that coin.I have cleaned up some coins in some harsh ways in the past and most came out worse then I started with. From what I'm seeing it doesn't look really all crudded up.I see the date and most of the features.Personal,, I like an old coin to look...........well, old.
I have soaked some crud covered coins in pure olive oil to bust up the crud with pretty good results.
Nice finds and good hunting & good luck..................................
