I'm experiencing a bit of a drought. Snakes are showing up. Bugs are getting bad. But, it's time to get serious.

This is from the weekend before last and it's the only thing that I found. It is a pretty nice buckle though. That's not gilt BTW. It's just the lighting.

I found some very early buckles on this site, but this one seems more like late 18th century, but I don't really know.

Anyone have a thought about the age?

Thanks for looking.

I think that type of pin attachment point puts it right at the end of the shoe buckle era so 1780-1800

Agreed. Nice shoe buckle

That's a beauty, congrats! :occasion14:

Thanks for the help with the time period. Since I live in the Lowcountry, I was going to hype my thread with a title like "I Found Francis Marion's Shoe Buckle." And, with that date range, maybe I did find Francis Marion's shoe buckle.

Agreed 18th C Shoe buckle.

Nice looking shoe buckle.

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

That's a really nice buckle frame congrats! It seems like the ornate and interesting buckles are always missing the tongue and chape. Great find though I would be stoked to find that one!

Amongst our group, we never find buckles with tongue and chape intact. I don't know if it's the environment or what. I found one knee buckle where the frame was brass and the other parts were a rusted glob of iron. I did manage to restore it somewhat, but that's the only one for me.

Interestingly, I do have two tiny, intact (underwear?) buckles that are the size of thumbnails. Don't know how they survived in a farmer's field.

Thats a nice one for sure Ill tell ya these Farmers fields its crazy all the cool stuff people find Keep em coming

A very nice one and yes to late 18th century.

Thanks!

I've found two frames and two complete buckles. I may be incorrect here but maybe the more simple / utilitarian buckles (the types I have found) were made a little tougher while the fancy ones were not made for rugged everyday wear? The simple buckles are probably more common so there's a greater chance of finding those complete. Just some thoughts. It is a miracle when these things survive being in a ploughed field for a couple hundred years too. Congrats again. I wasn't too interested in the buckles but once I found one I became an instant fan of the buckles. Still searching for a neck stock buckle, or a knee buckle.

I think I have a couple of knee buckle frames, but I had to google "neck stock buckle." I didn't even know what they look like. I'm adding that to my list.
