Today I found evidence that someone else has been hunting in one of "my" parks! And doing a poor job of it
Now this park, more than most Ive found, is definitely full of trash. Tucked away on the far side of town in the middle of an older neighborhood Id say it doesn't get much attention, as even on the weekends its usually empty.
So today I thought I'd hit some familiar ground while I continue to learn the highs and lows of my new-to-me deus machine and dial in my ear to picking out those good solid tones -- while running wide open with full tones. As mentioned, the park is littered with trash... so its a good place to practice i.d'ing the unwanteds... pull tabs, bottle caps, foil, etc.
So I'm swinging along one of my favorite boundaries playing name that beep, and getting pretty good at it, when I spot *gasp* an open hole. Hmm.. that's odd, I say to myself, maybe an animal diggings?
I walk over to it and it looks man-made. Hole here, pile of dirt next to it.. I swing over it and get a faint non-ferrous signal with no id. So I go in with the pinpointer and find a dime a few inches under the bottom and to the right of the hole. Coincidence? Maybe.
I fill the hole in and walk a few more steps where I spot a two more open holes with pull tabs sitting next to them... hmmm. Suspicious. So I picked up the pull tabs and filled in the holes, of course. I'm sure you would too. Right? I'm now beginning to realize my claim has been trespassed, and rather sloppily.
I swing a few more steps and get a big hollow aluminum sounding signal.... I'm just beginning to recognize this sound now, so I decide to check it out... I barely hit it with my digger and a big hole opens up like a trap door, revealing an old sliced open Budweiser can still wedged in the ground. I remove the offending can and refill the hole.
Now of course I realize this is a public park and I have as much right to hunt here as the offender. But this person is definitely amateur, which is fine as we all start somewhere, but obviously they are not following our code of conduct when participating in this hobby. And we all know it only takes one fool to ruin the fun for everyone.
My only hope here is that this person quickly became frustrated with digging up trash and gave up the hobby after digging (and not filling) 4 holes. Or at least went home to do some research on how to use a metal detector.
I of course went on to hone my id'ing bottle caps skills, dug another handful of clad, a junker diamond ring, and a pocket knife. I think Ive got the bottlecap i.d. down (using the silencer method).
So a short 4 hour hunt today.... yielding more treasure than trash, and turned up a few firsts. Found my first pocket knife, my first Nintendo game (yes I found a Nintendo game), and my first [junker] solitaire diamond ring...

Now, If I could just find the irresponsible person and have a polite word with them about their bad habits....and maybe share with them what I've learned thus far.
