That's an odd looking "paleo point". A Clovis made on a flake? Hmmmm? You sure have some nice glossy flint in E.KY., that's for sure. Gary

So I thought the same thing as I was trying to look these up. I figured all the points were of the Woodland period,except the tiny purple point, and the one with the two stems? I couldn’t find anything Woodland that looked like that? It’s made from the same chert and found at same depth in the rock shelter we are working through. Interesting and thanks for your input in helping me figure things out

I usually rub a little coconut oil on them shines them up. It fades off pretty quick. We’ve pulled all of these up out of the dirt while digging / sifting out a rock shelter I’m guessing the dirt preserves them better than say the creek wearing at them.

Great finds , that Paleo looking one is odd for sure but still a really sweet point. What depth did you find it at ? Was it deeper than other points you found if not maybe it was reused / repurposed by woodland era natives. Was this the shelter you were asking for advice a few weeks ago about how to dig / hunt for artifacts ?

The Clovis style base looking one was found yesterday at the far end below the large rock on left. We had just started for the day, I’m sifting and my partner is filling buckets the depth was probably in the top 8 inches that’s just my guess though. everything we’ve found in here seems to be in the top foot of dirt. Then a wet clay sand for about 2 ft deep void of much. This is actually a different rock house than what I originally asked about. As previously stated, we are really new at this. I found a different rock shelter area about a month ago. That’s when I asked for advice. Since then, we’ve done more exploring and found some other very promising spots. We’ve been bouncing between 3 spots now, but this shelter seems to have less dripping water and dryer to work in so we’ve hit it for the last 3 or 4 days All 3 locations we’ve dug around in have produced points and chert though, so feel really good about that.

So my partner who was doing the digging informed me that the little bi-stem piece actually was dug out from underneath the edge of the giant rock towards far end. About 2 1/2 feet deeper than rest of stuff we’ve been finding. Had this at about the same depth yesterday on the closer end of the rock pictured.

Also, a Woodland period native could have imitated or re-used the Clovis style point possibly, no? Just a thought. Thanks again for helping educate me!

Thank you, these are actually from about 4 days out there. I was showing a couple earlier finds as well in the pics. Sorry for the confusion. My best day was two days ago, when we found the Clovis style, the tiny purple gray Christmas tree, and the brown woodland style point. 2 in the last sift of the day! Having a blast social distancing!!

The rock shelter was probably an attractive spot for many many years, a Clovis person may have found it a good spot to stay the same way a woodland group did
