All from same bank, Found a 1972 half that looks and feels silver. It isn't 90% and it weighs .2 grams more than a clad halve. No mintmark. It is really odd. I took pics on the scale so everyone would believe me.

Box #1-1967 ender(Only silver in box)

Box #2-1972 mystery coin, 2 40%s

Box #3-Skunk

Box #4-Skunk.

HH. IS. Will upload pics as soon as K gets them.(Thanks again K!)

looking forward to the pic..

Sucks on that ender box, I had 2 like that in the last 2 weeks, both String boxes, Lone enders and thats it.....really weird, my usualy rule of thumb is each ender = 5 silvers and it usually holds true.

The 72 is probably plated.

It doesn't look plated to me due to the even wear. The edge pic doesn't do it justice. I am gonna take it to someone with a silver tester or something to be sure. I immediately thought it was a franklin on first site and then I saw that. ???

That's an interesting find Austin. I'd take a file to that and see if there is a core.

It doesn't look plated to me. It may be silver plated if anything, but that's not chrome.

I don't want to damage it sean, I know it's not chrome. I just don't know what to think about it.

awesome pic man great find!

It might be a magic coin, try lightly tapping it on something to see if it will come apart. If it does there should be another coin hiden inside of it.

Does it have the nice 'ting' to it when you drop it on a glass or hard countertop...or does it just sound like a regular clad half?

Interesting find, though :)

might have been plated 39 yrs ago in 1972 and was circulated a lot between now and then, though I am not an expert and this is my opinion. Cool find though, i would keep it!

What's a 40%er weigh? That seems to weigh considerably more than a clad half.

Imagine if you just found a 72 on a non S minted silver planchet...

Info on the 40%ers:

Dates: 1965-1970
1976
Mints: Philadelphia (1965-1967)
Denver (1968-1970)
San Francisco (1976)
Composition: 40% silver
60% copper
Weight: 11.50 grams
0.37 ounces
Diameter: 30.61 mm
1.21 inches

It would be very cool (and valuable) if you indeed have a 1972 half struck on a 40% planchette. I hope that's what it is, but its not likely. Most likely you simply have a plated half...maybe even silver plated. I would think since the plating process adds metal, it would add weight as well. As for the wear, I would guess that it was plated several years ago and saw a lot of circulation, or maybe someone plated his "lucky coin" and carried it in his pocket for years.

Just speculating. Hope its the real deal.

Perhaps it is a counterfeit? It would be really interesting if it was but I don't know that there are any counterfeits of the Kennedy half dollars.

And that, exactly, is why they would be a great thing to counterfeit

I'm going to say no, printing money is easy

my dad was a secret service agent, i saw counterfeit money all the time

getting planchets and striking coins or trying to mold your own? I doubt it.
