Today's find

Me and a friend got out today. it was a spur-of-the moment thing, while we were on the way back from running errands. We went scouting for new sites, with success! Here's a blade that I found (we did find several other points). Very thin and well-made, actually better than the pic depicts. Made of Reeds Spring chert.

It's known for the southwestern Ozarks region. It's found in northeastern OKlahoma, northwestern AR, southeast KS and southwest MO. Some variants of it really resemble Upper Mercer chert, which is found much further to the east. It resembles it so much that many people have taken to calling it "Lower Mercer". There are over 40 different variants with a wide range of colors: browns, tans, grays, greens and blues primarily.

Wow thanks for the info. Im in west central illinois. Do you think this is the same material?

Matt, why is this find a blade rather than a spade? The size? Is it unifaced? It is beautiful.

Spades are made much more wide and far more robust. The edgework is amazing, also something that you won't typically find on hoes / spades. It's bifacially parallel flaked.
