Todays Pre Civil War finds.

Jimzz and I have been hunting an old fort site that dates from 1851-1862, we've been finding some pretty good stuff. Today Jimmy and I both dug a button we cannot seem to ID. We were told they are kepi buttons, but, I cannot find any pics that match the ones we found, anyone have any idea what they are? Also found what I believe is part of a spur and part of an Epaulet(shoulder scale) and pieces of the shoulder scale we believe. Running the Nox 800 and it is tearing it up at this place so far.

Absolutely no doubt about your epaulette pieces and spur. very nice. My digging buddy found a small button like yours in central Virginia a couple of years ago, but I don't think the shield was smooth. I'll have to check. That one was identified as war of 1812 era. Kepi or cuff, I don't know. Nice stuff!

The eagle button with the shield is a forage cap button. We find them in an 1850s camp in West Texas along with Rifleman, Dragoon, and US Great Coat buttons.
