Token/tag?

I found this digging the other day and was wondering what it could be from. The front just says No. 16 and there is nothing on the back. Thanks for any help!

Yes I found it right next to the house it was built in the late 1880s

Looks like a tag used to identify a plumbing valve #, but not likely based on where you found it.

I was thinking along the lines of an antique cow tag, however I've never seen one with a beveled edge. I'm leaning towards a tool tag like this one- neat find!

Maybe some type of pickers token?

This could be a tool tag or a piece work tag from a cannery or other industry where workers were assigned a number and paid on a piece rate. also could be a tag from an underground worker such as a miner or sand dog, When hung on a rack they knew you were in the hole should there be a cave in.
