Went back to the site I found all the open holes....still not sure if it is someone digging or animals. Anyhow...found some nick-knacks here and there and roamed around the woods for about an hour. Came back to the area that looks like an old barn or house foundation. Never found too much around there but thought I would give it another shot since the heavy snow last week knocked a lot of the weeds down. Sure enough my en-devours paid off. Dug this beautiful cartridge box plate near some rocks and underneath a root.

One question though...looking on-line the only plates I see do not have the "." period after the "U". There is no period after the "S". What kind of plate or what the heck is this. I seem to believe it is "Civil-War" period but I can't find another one like it. Any input?

I would say it has to be punched from the back to make what seems to be a dot. HH

That is an excellent relic! I agree that there must be something on the back that caused the dot. Could we see a picture of the back?

I agree with the "puched from the back" but still a Great dig.How big are the hole's you're finding? Right now I have skunk's rooting in my yard for grub's.It look's like someone aerated the lawn with some decent sized hole's

Holes are nice size. Im going to get back there next week and really scan the area. I will try to get some pics of the holes and we will see what everyone else thinks. As far as the dot ".". Id have to say that dot is actually manufactured. It looks really good and also appears to have been placed there on purpose.

I don't think there is any chance that it is not real. I agree with the others, something made the dot on the front after the plate was made. Hey it's a super find and legit.
