I had to find something to do over the rainy Labor Day weekend so I figured I'd give point hunting a try....went to a river where points have been found in the past by fisherman, found these 2 pieces close to the mouth of a feeder creek, does this look like material that may have been used for tools? Just wondering if it's worth going back for another look farther up. Both very hard and smooth, the salmon colored piece is very translucent....thanks.

It's very possible that type of material was used. It wouldn't hurt to check that area again especially if you have heard of others finding legitimate artifacts in that area.

NE Ohio has a lot of Coshocton flint which is usually black. There are though lots of different materials in Ohio that were used.

I think the grey material would be the better of the two for making stone tools, the other seems like it has a bunch of internal fractures and maybe a crystal structure. But I would say yes you found stone that is knappable. Also the location sounds like an attractive area to na’s here in Kansas they liked to set up in places were smaller creeks joined with larger streams.

Thanks for the info....much appreciated!
