Thanks for the help! I will be getting in a lot more detecting and sifting in the next week! The "TOOTH" has obvious holes running down through it, like where the old roots were. This is the second one in the newly uploaded pics.

The shape of the first picture does not match up with the other ones you posted. Were pieces broken off the original after the first picture was taken? I'm still stumped on what it could be.

Top of skull to a garfish

I found alot of those on a permission dig site for artifacts.... it took me a long while to figure that one out.
I thought they were small alligator skulls at first.

That's strange. Gar in the Gulf of Mexico? I'm from Tennessee so I'm used to bow fishing for alligator gar, but I had no idea there were saltwater gar that size. The first photo is of the very first piece we found. It went home with my father and I can't photograph at the time. I will get better photos of it when I return home.

You will find Land mammals mixed in also.. Most of the Gulf of Mexico Was a forest at one time.
Then water..then..land again.
Garfish thrive where fresh and saltwater meet.

I regularly see gar in the gulf, lots outside of crystal river. Great call GB. I had no idea but knew you would!

LOL.. "Gar"terBoy would sound a bit funny huh?

Kind of like the guy who shows up at all the receptions to catch the garter in order to place it on the lucky flower catching lady.

Hey that could be fun for you!

THANKS for all the input guys!!! But Im just not seeing it. Heres a photo of a skull. Could you point it out?gar skull.webp

I'm pretty sure Garterboy.....I mean Gatorboy is right. If you zoom in on the armor plates of the skull you can see an almost starburst shaped pattern.

There is a few different species.
An alligator gar isn't going to look the same as the smaller spotted gar.
On a side note..those plastic containers with the dividers that go in soft tackle boxes work great for labeling and storing.

If you found those on dig sites, I assume the natives were eating them. I would have thought that there were better fish out there to eat. Plus the roe or eggs of gar is toxic to humans. What are your thoughts? Maybe just an easy fish to catch.

I believe they were eating them.. they may have also been using the roe to do a kind of fishing where you block off a section of water then add a toxin to it making the fish belly up to be gathered.
They also use the scales as cutting tools.

It's alot funner to take it a bit further than just an I.D. to me.
This forum along with the Native American artifacts forum tie in together sometimes.

Man U guys are great!!! Thank you for taking the time to help me out!!!
