We spent the morning with one of our main land-owners. Firstly to give them a very rare Sceat, & 2nd to gain permission to record the rare Roman Eagle mystery piece we found this year.
With all the ankle breakers that were flatten by the rain we thought we would attempt another one. Sadly, the clay had kept it really bad, most of it hadn't even fell properly & was on edge. As we were there we braved it, in the rain showers as well! I've walked better whilst blind drunk!
It was a bad choice & after nearly 3 hours we called it.
If we were looking for Roman Pottery we were successful but we weren't so it kinda sucked.

4 Scrappies
1 Silvered Button Fooled me for a second
Swan Head Hook used as a tie-down on a Roman Cart (Small piece of it!)
Roman Samian Ware piece with makers-mark (Stamp) CINT-V[GENI] - 'Cintugenus' of Lubie (France)

Wow-I wouldn't mind having a tough day like that...

You need to hunt with me, I will show you what "kinda sucks" is all about.

Hang in there Cru. It'll improve shortly, I am sure of this!

Still a better day than I had in the frozen tundra I call home.

You didn't broke your ankles :hello2: and were close to a top find with the swan mount. May there is more somewhere as it looks like it's not the place to break from overload. I like the stamped TS shard. Travelled all the way from southern France...Do you kow when the Colchester manufacture started to make your own TS?

Very nice day out detecting, congratulations! :occasion14:

I wish I could have more bad days like you. :) Congrats on the finds and being hard core enough to bear the weather.

No, to be honest, I knew we did some imitation TS (Redware) which was not as fine. Never knew Colchester did it??

Tough days and conditions can be rough for sure but you still got things we can only dream of. of all things, I got into the fire ants yesterday, they have a way of letting you know that they don't like you. hope the conditions improve on that site for you Cru

Colchester is listed as the only manufacture in both provinces of Britannia but i have no further details on it. :dontknow:

A bad day detecting is better than a good day at work :)

These T/S products were made in Colchester up to the end of the second century, started by continental potters from Trier, Lezoux etc.
Please refer to the link for comprehensive details.
Colchester terra sigillata

Great finds as always! Those field conditions sound tough. Maybe things will be smooth on the next dig. Good luck guys!

Still a very nice haul :)
