I cleaned out my truck from this past Saturdays outing. The trash was put in a plastic Walmart bag. Sunday I sorted trough it. I found a disc/glob of metal and as I went to toss it I noticed a bit of pattern so I decide to clean it. It cleaned up nicely and I thought it might be a small pocket watch because of a small piece of crust on the side like a stem. After quite a bit of chipping it popped open to reveal an old snuff box, full of decayed snuff. I believe it is/was gold plated. It is a nice find that almost got away.

Remember to double check your trash so you don,t toss a keeper!

I agree with Deno, looks like a compact case from the '20s. But who knows
maybe some lady threw out the powder and filled it with snuff:)

This is an old compact case. The stuff you found inside is make-up.

I have looked at both compacts and snuff holders. They both can be this size 1 1/4" diameter. There was no application pad or lining to the case. The snuff was snuff, it was completely filled. Wether you call it a snuff box or compact is still debatable. There is no writing or marks on the box just a basic pattern on both top and bottom. It may have been gold plated. It does have a small hinge on the side that is in contact. I was able to open it but if I tried to do much more the hinge would break.

I am open to help with an ID but if you don.t back up your statements with some facts, links or the reasoning you used I cannot use them to held with the ID.

Thanks,

Ed D.

What does that writing on the inside say (last picture)? Maybe that will shed some light on what it is. BTW... looks like a snuffbox to me! Great find!

I had said it had no writing , but after looking at my own picture I am going to have another look at it.

Thanks jb7487.

I will posted my findings after work, later today.

Ed, In general snuff box's had strong hinges due to the fact they had to be air tight. They would only put
in enough snuff for a days use from what i have read. The contents of yours appears to have been compacted
tight by the residue left on the sides. I have dug a lot of these and have always assumed they were compacts
due to others opinions with a lot more experience than me. I am no expert by any means. Just my opinion.

Thanks Deno. I think I will take another look at the contents.

If you see what the writing is on the inside, it will direct you to what the contents were. Old snuff boxes were generally hand made. I'm no expert either, but this box was obviously made by a press machine or something that was mass produced. That's not to say taht it isn't a snuff box, but I have found several of these which turned out to be make-up boxes. The wording on the inside is the key. Hogge

Interested in what it says and your findings. Hogge

I have to agree with Hogge. It looks like a rouge compact from the 20' or 30's. I found 2 this year. Mine were brass that were once highly polished.

Cleaned the inside a little more. The inside was well perserved, so once I got the "snuff?" of it gave a clear reverse image. It has "Kissgroo" or "Kissgrool" The K is big and the L is too if it is part of the name. In small letters under is "USA". A internet search did not show any results. Lets talk about the contents. Some of it still has impressions from the case/box/compact. The remains appear to be one thing, no signs of a lining or application pad. Finally here is a cleaned picture. Let me know what you think.

I'm reading it backwards, but I think it reads"Kissproof", a brand of makeup by "Loreal'".If we could get a pic of the bottom it would confirm. It's just the way they printed the P and F.

I will go with "Kissproof USA". Loreal made this, I think someone else called this item a vintage rouge pot 1920,s. It is only 1.14" in diameter. Does rouge dry up like the bag in my first post pictures? How about powder or Snuff? Any opinions? Guesses on the date and I think we can put this rescue find to bed.
