Pretty much just a cookie, heavily encased in sulfide. Couldn't see much detail at all !!20181018_164808.webp

After some cleaning more detail emerged, and although this little 2 reale (I think) is pretty tore up from corrosion it's still a beautiful little piece of king phillip the fifths treasure. 20181020_215108.webp this 4.6 gram beauty came from a beach where the survivors from the 1733 Spanish fleet disaster came ashore and formed a survivor/salvage camp.20181020_220259.webp
Turned out that there was a bold little roaring lion, Jerusalem cross, and some of the florenzada and castles on one side, and some of the shield is visible on the other side. Still got some cleaning to go but almost there. Stubborn sulfide are hiding a bit of detail still. Here's a shot of the Cobb with some other finds from the summer20181021_094030.webp
The small decorative cross came from the 1733 site along with the musket balls, bottom of the bottle, coral encrusted Spanish olive jar shard, and the iron spike. Got those earlier this summer. The smooth beach worn olive jar shards, the small ballast stones, the small blue kngxi pottery shard, and the piece of conglomerate all came from the 1715 fleet on the treasure coast. I got that stuff last weekend hunting up there. I got a bunch of sea glass and shells up there too, and probably only just missed the coins as conditions went from good to bad right in front of me as I hunted.20181021_093933.webp

Fantastic haul:) Hope you find more!

That's a beauty of a cob! Lots of other goodies too. Nice hunting!
I spent 3 weeks on vacation detecting on the treasure coast this past spring. All I managed was a heavily encrusted and deteriorated sword only exposed by xrays once I got home. Even using my GPX 4800 and 18" mono coil, I couldnt get down past the replenished sand. But I did hit a memorial at 4 feet! LOL
Any tips on when is the best time of year to hunt that area? Would give anything to find ONE fleet cob in my lifetime. Thanks!

Killin it in the keys.....great cob !

Excellent Bart! Sorry I missed you again on the Treasure Coast. I should be back on the beaches later in the week.

Great job Bart, you do find neat items where ever you go. :hello2:

Some amazing finds! Look forward to seeing what you pull out next! What was the detector of choice on this hunt if you don’t mind me asking ?

Thanks everyone !! It was a fun week for sure !! Digger o'dell, give it a try in the fall winter season. Late hurricanes and north easters are great for cutting the beach back. I like to hunt on the king tides too. Summers are slow and Sahara hot !! Happy hunter, I love my excalibur, that's what I use most of the time. I'll be back up there soon Steve !!

Thanks much! May have to try for next year. Keep us posted on conditions!

That's fantastic! I've found ONE such cob in all of my hunting (1715 fleet). I know you've had one banner vote for a previous 8 reales cob, but I've got to vote banner for this, as well. Although many silver cobs have found themselves in the market as a result of state-sanctioned salvaging efforts, finding one while metal-detecting on the beach is still relatively rare. Great job!

Great find! Fantastic work! Good luck!

Congratulations on the Cob. A bucketlister for sure.:icon_thumright:
