Pretty much just a cookie, heavily encased in sulfide. Couldn't see much detail at all !!20181018_164808.webp

After some cleaning more detail emerged, and although this little 2 reale (I think) is pretty tore up from corrosion it's still a beautiful little piece of king phillip the fifths treasure. 20181020_215108.webp this 4.6 gram beauty came from a beach where the survivors from the 1733 Spanish fleet disaster came ashore and formed a survivor/salvage camp.20181020_220259.webp
Turned out that there was a bold little roaring lion, Jerusalem cross, and some of the florenzada and castles on one side, and some of the shield is visible on the other side. Still got some cleaning to go but almost there. Stubborn sulfide are hiding a bit of detail still. Here's a shot of the Cobb with some other finds from the summer20181021_094030.webp
The small decorative cross came from the 1733 site along with the musket balls, bottom of the bottle, coral encrusted Spanish olive jar shard, and the iron spike. Got those earlier this summer. The smooth beach worn olive jar shards, the small ballast stones, the small blue kngxi pottery shard, and the piece of conglomerate all came from the 1715 fleet on the treasure coast. I got that stuff last weekend hunting up there. I got a bunch of sea glass and shells up there too, and probably only just missed the coins as conditions went from good to bad right in front of me as I hunted.20181021_093933.webp

A bucket lister for sure!!I love the shells as well. How did you clean that beauty up so well?

Thanks everyone !! It was a fun week for sure !! Digger o'dell, give it a try in the fall winter season. Late hurricanes and north easters are great for cutting the beach back. I like to hunt on the king tides too. Summers are slow and Sahara hot !! Happy hunter, I love my excalibur, that's what I use most of the time. I'll be back up there soon Steve !!

👍👍👍

So......after the sand is rinsed off good, it's time to work on the sulfide crust. If you zoom in on the pics of it, you can see specks of sand fused in the sulfide crust. To remove the sand and soften the sulfide I submerge the coin in a diluted acid bath. 50/50 water and muriatic acid. When the fizzing stops or slows dramatically this process is done. This takes about 30 seconds to a minute.at this point all the sand is dissolved off and the sulfide casing has softened. Now under running water the sulfide caseing can be gently manipulated with my fingers, and most of it flakes right off. The coin goes from this20181018_164757.webpto this20181018_172345.webp. At this point it's on to a tin foil lined dish baking soda and boiling water. Place the coin on the tin foil lined dish. Take some baking soda and mix with water until you have dissolved it into a saturated solution. Take this solution and microwave until boiling. Take the boiling solution and pour it into the foil lined bowl with the coin in it, and watch the magic happen. I had to repeat this process quite a few times to get the end result. After this process the coin is very clean and white.20181020_220259.webp you can re patina the coin at this point to bring out some detail and put some shadow back in the details20181022_104734.webp
I only do this with the treasure fleet coins, they get there value as mounted pieces of jewelry and for the story line and provenance surrounding them, and not there numismatic value in most cases. So if I have plans to mount it I'll clean it to white, but I do have a few left with heavy patina and not much cleaning also.

I love the Cobb and story. Awesome find! Top of my bucket list for sure. Congrats!!

That's some good information, thanks! I've had really good luck soaking in CLR for removing the sulfides. It also dissolves encrusted shells. Mostly dont have that problem here in the great lakes region, but every once in a while we get a crusty one out of the water.

Bart I find a lot of crusty silver coins but nothing like that one! Sweet save! And Big Congrads!!

I registered find as a BANNER !:)

I vote BANNER as well. I've come back half a dozen times to just stare at that beauty.

That's fantastic! I've found ONE such cob in all of my hunting (1715 fleet). I know you've had one banner vote for a previous 8 reales cob, but I've got to vote banner for this, as well. Although many silver cobs have found themselves in the market as a result of state-sanctioned salvaging efforts, finding one while metal-detecting on the beach is still relatively rare. Great job!

and finding one with my detector is my main goal. I've taken pounds of rusty nails out of the sand so it's only a matter of time before I'm rewarded with silver.

My banner vote is in also Bart .

Thanks guys for the banner votes, and yes it's become some what of an obsession for me to find the Spaniards treasure. It was a slow summer with all the seaweed. It's starting to affect my hunting, and I barely even hunted for the fresh drops. Long days of nothing but trash, canslaw, iron. Now that conditions are getting better, I will refocus my efforts and hunt even harder now. Last night we had a full moon and king tides. I'll slide out of work early and hit some Spanish spots at today's low tide. Woooo hoooo there's Spanish treasure out there on the beach !!!

Way to go!! Great finds. I’m really happy for you!

If you hear a knock on your door its Mel Fisher thats mine!!!!!lol Amazing find good job

OH LORDY !!! I just found 2 more today plus a killer ring, silver cuff links, and another brass adornment !!! Guess I'll start another thread !! Wooo hooo there's treasure on the beach !!
