The Canadian Press MATHESON, Ont. — Ontario Provincial Police say treasure hunters and the curious are visiting the site of a crash that sprayed millions of dollars in coins across a northeastern Ontario highway.
A tractor-trailer carrying $3 million to $5 million worth of loonies and toonies crashed on Highway 11, north of Kirkland Lake, early Wednesday morning.
Staff Sgt. Rick Witty says most of the coins have been recovered and the scene has been released and opened to traffic.
Const. Marc Depatie says people visiting the crash site are asked to wear brightly coloured clothing so they will be clearly discernable as pedestrians.
And Depatie says parked vehicles that interfere with traffic will be ticketed.
Witty says the recovery process hasn't been 100 per cent and there are still some coins around that treasure hunters are picking up.
