Treasure salvaged by Indians?

In the book Shipwrecks in the Americas by Robert F. Marx, I read of numerous accounts where the Indians would massacre survivors as they came ashore, the harvest the treasure for themselves. Yet I haven't read anything about any of that treasure being located. There must be tons of treasure hidden inland by the Indians. Any thoughts?

I've seen silver and gold coins turned into adornments in a few museums, so some of it has surfaced through the years.
