Found this at a new site I tried today, was an old farm dating back to the early 1800's, it is about 3 inches long and made of brass, looks to me like it may be an old tap for tapping maple trees for syrup. What do you think?

it looks like it could be a rear entry pipe or thimble to a muzzleloading guns ram rod.

This one is longer and I see what you mean ...even a barrell tap is different because of the on/off valve.....hmmmmmm ???

Good call, Skunemonk! Looks like a long tail ramrod pipe to me, too.

Hey, Mainedigger—

Great relic!

Well, I can't draw you a picture... but luckily, someone else did! See item #21 on the diagram near the bottom of the page at:

PBK, thanks for that..now I know exactly what it is, it is the receiving end for where the ramrod slides into under the stock when it is not in useand is stored.

just thought I'd mention, that ram rod looks a heck of a lot like a pen and ink tip....in fact from that pic I don't think I'd be able to tell the two apart!

Nice find either way!

Hey, Captain Jack—

You know, a long tail ramrod pipe does look sort of like an old dip pen nib. However, it's much larger than a nib, and it doesn't have a slit down the center of the point (and a vent hole at the upper end of the slit) as a nib does.

Just for the heck of it, here's a photo of some old pen nibs so that other folks on the forum can see the resemblance that you mentioned.
