I've got an excalibur 800 that is probably around 3 to 4 years old. I'd like to replace the pinpoint / discrim knob with an aftermarket knob.

What is the trick to getting the original knob off? On my Excalibur 1000 the knob just pulled right off. Could there be a screw under the yellow cap on the knob to my 800? I have tried pulling straight up on the knob pretty hard, and it doesn't budge. I'm afraid of breaking or damaging the post under the knob if I pull too hard and it isn't meant to come off that way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Only difference between the 800 and 1000 is coil size, the knobs should just pull up and off.I have changed knobs on 3 different Excal 1000's and they were all pull up. knob could be hard to pull due to build up. you can always pull the cap off to see, but I have never seen one one with a set screw or screw except the after market like I have on mine.

I use knobs at least twice the stock size and they are also scalloped.

Good luck.

There are some after market nob's that have a set screw. On the inside of the top cap :tongue3:.

My excal 1000 has the original knobs.
Under the caps are NUTS, not screws. They tighten a tapered plastic fitting
that secures the knob to the shaft.
If they are tight there is no way you will pull the knob off without loosening
the nuts.

Sounds like they know what they are talking about so check and see. Mine always pulled off with a good tug, I replaced mine with larger electronic knobs using SS allen set screws.

And what is the downside to using the brass setscrew? The inside of the new knob is also brass. I see several people saying to find SS setscrews. But what about the brass liner inside of the knob?

Brass will rust after time, brass screw slots will also crack if too much torque used to tighten, SS never will on both accounts especially if allen......It takes a little looking but SS is worth it. I check mine about every 6 weeks or so by loosening screws and and retightening them....

Kiwijohn solved the problem! I popped off the yellow cap and sure enough there was a nut there. I took the nut off and the knob slipped right off. Man I hope I didn't mess anything up tugging on the knob so hard :violent1: :BangHead:

Pulling out on them you are pretty safe as the shaft of the turn pot has a shoulder that is up against the mounting face where it bolts to the detector. Basically you could pull it through the face plate of the detector and it would still work. However never push hard IN! The back of the pot is where the resister plate is and it is all held together with a thin stamped sheet metal with tabs bent over to hold it together. Push hard enough the post gets loose and the connection inside gets bad causing a static or bad connection and false signals. If you push in hard enough it will just pop apart due to the tabs bending straight and the back of the pot will fall off. Sometimes you can pinch a loose pot at each of the tabs and tighten it back up. I really doubt you hurt it pulling on it. Get some new knobs and go have fun!
