Trigger Guard from ??? - Indian War Era Site

I found this piece at a late 1860s era site used during the Snake Indian War. It was broken into two pieces (see my JB Weld seam). One end is missing the hole for the mounting screw. I'm guessing it came from a musket/rifled musket because I've found .69 cal round balls and .58 cal conicals at this site. Any ideas on what weapon this was a part of?

I think the finger-rest to the front indicates it is from a rifle and not a musket. (If the whole piece is pointing in the direction of the barrel, the finger rest is just in front of the half-heart shape that protected the trigger).

I agree with CreakyDigger, this would be from a rifle, not a musket. Muskets being military arms would not be so decorative.
