Had today off, weather was still nice enough, ground's not frozen yet, and Seated Park was calling my name. Hit a section with lots of hills at the bottom part of the park, just listening for those good hits I may have missed before- the ones with nails or other junk in there with the coins.

First good signal was the 45 Merc with a chunk of rusty iron in there with it. Not long after, another of those good/bad ones produced the little piece of silver. Holed and in rough shape, I still didn't want to scrape it clean, especially since I was thinking that I may have FINALLY knocked the 3-cent silver off my wish list. To my old blind eyes however, it looked foreign, but I figured I'd wait until I got home to rinse it.

Added an 1899 Barber and 1874 Indian before calling it a day (the Indian is soaking, but looks like it's in decent shape).

After I rinsed the tiny silver, my guess was (sadly) correct- it was foreign. My book on world coins seems to indicate it is a Peruvian 1/2 reale. Not the 3-center I was hoping for, but still a nice find. If anyone has any further info on it, by all means please tell me, as I am hardly a world coin expert.

Hope the weather cooperates for everyone to get out a few more times at least!

HH and enjoy the pics.

HI Jeff; Nice Trifecta there. What you have is a Spanish 1/2 Reale minted in Mexico City in 1789. It's condition I'd rate as in Good Condition. Value is about $10 - $20. The hole was put there by the coins owner. They would drill the hole and run a string through it and wear it about their necks so they would not lose them. Stores accepted them even with the holes because it was such a common practice. As far as shavings go it would be negligible and not worth the bother to save it unless they holed a few thousand coins ok. I'm here in Boston ok. Happy Hunting. PEACE:RONB

nice silver! the half real (not spelled reale) is a nice treat! A half real should signal differently from a 3 cent silver. A 3 cent silver usually sounds like foil. Wish I could still get out and detect!

Very cool all three! The spanish would be a great find, seeing the date is a huge bonus, but I would be really happy to find the Barber. I have been hunting two years and have found some colonial coins, so the "oldness" is here.. but I still haven't found a Barber! So, that is sweet. Thanks for sharing. Love to see em. Congrats!

HI testing 123; I'm not sure but I believe the spelling is Reale ok. PEACE:RONB
