I'm trying to get some information on two items (attached photos). Both of the items were given to me about 60 years ago by an Aunt that lived in ILL. I don't know if the items are from that state, but as I recall she said they were found near a river in the northern part of ILL. The stone axe? is about 5"X 4"X 3", and weights about 3 pounds, the pipe? is in rough condition (has been broken) and is about 4" X 4".
Thanks

The axe as you called it... is a type yes... but it proper name is "wampum" club... pronounced like "swamp".. Was tied with gut twine with split flexable 18 inch or so stick... it was used in warfare on horseback and swung at the skull of enemy.. instantly killed them by crushing blow.
the other looks like it was in making of pipe... peace pipe type.
Made from....... you guessed it.... "pipe stone".

"Wampum" means "white shell beads" in the Wampanoag and Narragensett languages.

The other story sounds better.

I think it's likely a Civil War Wampum at that!

But the pipe does appear to be Catlinite and may indeed be a pipe. "Peace" may or may not have anything to do with the pipe ceremony. Just as likely to be smoked when forming a war alliance to attack a common enemy.
