I went out this past Saturday testing some places to hunt this Spring & found a potential site in the woods. It was in the low 40's,overcast, but wearing long johns made all the difference with the whipping wind. In about 3 hours, found two large cents both from 1814. Besides the scattered shotgun shells which come up at 12 22-12-29, found a few buttons as well which put this site on my hit list.

The coins came in at 12-40 & 12-41, and one must have been on edge since it was not always getting a 2 way hit, it was 6.5 inches down and not the strongest signal. Opening up the screen, no sounds of an iron grunt so I knew it was something worth digging even though I was going to dig it no matter what. The other Large cent was 7 inches down & it was a screamer every which way.

Hope spring comes here soon....

I'm not really a woods hunter, but there are a lot of woods around here. Just out of curiosity, what are the tell-tale signs of a potential spot in the woods?

Nice large cents!

Signals! LOL! :laughing7: I would say some good signs would be depressions in the ground from old cellar holes as well as stone walls and known history....

Erik,

Get in the woods. Look for anything that is old and not natural. Cellar holes, boundry lines made with piled stones, old well holes. Just about anywhere in the woods. Usually have much less trash and the potential for older targets. Do some research with old maps from the area. They can lead you to sites that have over grown through the years. Good luck!

Well there are a lot of woods near me though I have never really seen a cellar hole in my area, but I've always shyed away from just randomly meandering in some woods. I'm note sure if people do this. I have located some fairly lengthy stone walls lately. Is the best area near the wall? Like I said, I know very little about hunting in the woods.

Great Finds man...I would love to find just one of those !

Erik, I would say if you can envision where roads may have once been by using the stone walls as a hint you could locate places that have had more activity. Otherwise just walk the walls on each side and swing your detector. You know those old timers had to do a lot of bending over to build the walls and very likely dropped some items.

Just remember, someone owns the land.
