I went out this past Saturday testing some places to hunt this Spring & found a potential site in the woods. It was in the low 40's,overcast, but wearing long johns made all the difference with the whipping wind. In about 3 hours, found two large cents both from 1814. Besides the scattered shotgun shells which come up at 12 22-12-29, found a few buttons as well which put this site on my hit list.

The coins came in at 12-40 & 12-41, and one must have been on edge since it was not always getting a 2 way hit, it was 6.5 inches down and not the strongest signal. Opening up the screen, no sounds of an iron grunt so I knew it was something worth digging even though I was going to dig it no matter what. The other Large cent was 7 inches down & it was a screamer every which way.

Hope spring comes here soon....

Too cool¡!

I'm not really a woods hunter, but there are a lot of woods around here. Just out of curiosity, what are the tell-tale signs of a potential spot in the woods?

Nice large cents!

Erik, What I found out is when I am in the woods, and you do not see the signs of a cellar hole, I have had my most luck when;

1. I notice there are some big fat tree trunks letting me know that the site may have been undisturbed for 100 years or more.

2. Streams or a dry stream bed, whenever I found Reales, Large cents, buttons etc, alot of times I was not too far away(within 50 yards to a few yards or so)from them, & you would think that someone building a home would want it to be relative close to available water.

3. Check old maps for the roads that the woods are adjacent to, that you are interested in detecting. Older roads that have been there for a long time would have been used for families to travel, and most likely they would live not too far off from that road.

I'd take those ladies home anyday!

Thanks for posting the detecting details about your hunt. Great coins! Cindy

Like Dieselram94 is saying, make sure you have permission to hunt the area. People would bury items near walls, fences, trees, etc. because they made good markers. More than a few caches have been found hunting those areas.

Wow... I wish there were coins that old here in north Mississippi . Great finds.
