Hi there fellow treasure hunters. On to the next couple of pits that were close to the last ones we did. Nice day outside in the 60s and partly sunny. So off we went on another adventure as Bilbo would say. First pit was pretty shallow with only a couple bottles here and there. Fairly old too with some finds from the late 1880s early 90s. A Hoods sarsaparilla was found as well as a really cool stone ink with a cool top. Not much here but we had another pit right next to it.

Off to dig that one and it started out with ABM stuff. Ugh. But we were hopeful it would turn the corner into the 1800s. Got down to the bottom and started to find a couple tooled meds which gave us hope. Don was about to call it quits when he decided to dig right below his feet and towards the roots of a tree. Out pops a large champagne with a huge kick up. Then right beside that a Hostetters Stomach Bitters. Clearly an older spot as we thought they dug an ABM pit right over or close to the 1870-80 pit.

So I told him to keep on going and low and behold he pulls out another Hostetters. A twofer!!!! Sweet. Ended with an ink, some Caldwells and other small things. Not a huge day for sure but it was nice to see some Bitters see the light of day again. And wouldn’t ya know it another pit awaits right next to this one for the next adventure. Until then, stay safe out there everyone. And may all your pits be six feet apart from each other! Lol. Jgas. Looks like some real nice finds to me .What is the one on the right on the third set of pictures down from the top .It looks like a small soda bottle.I Found a Hoods once but the top is broken off .They are real nice

Those are champagne bottles the big dark green ones if that’s what you are referring to. That other small aqua one looks like a peppersauce to me. Cold pour with thick base glass. No soda bottles in this batch. Jgas

Sure glad you are on a roll. I love the Larkin and the swamp bottle. What do you do with the bulk of your common bottles?

I try to keep anything with embossing most of time. Although the super common ones I leave by a tree near the dig site. Most neighbors who chat with us while we dug are getting a little piece of history left behind. If they don’t collect them I go back and get the rest to recycle. I’ve dug so many slicks over the years I could fill up a large house with them all. Lol. Jgas.

ABM?
How deep are most pits?
Nice finds, I like the ink.

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

I'm always amazed...I just don't know how you convince people to let you dig a giant hole in there yard !! Again and again and again. Congrats !! Too cool !!

ABM. Automatic Bottle Machine. Post 1900. Of course we always like to dig prior to the turn of the century. 1850-90s is a nice target era. Most folks really don’t care about the holes. It’s like digging up a sump area. I show them pics of what we do and how it’s done. Eases their minds a bit. And then give them some finds. Word of mouth goes around pretty quickly and that we don’t destroy yards beyond repair. Works pretty good. We also try to hit a lot of vacant properties. Either owned by the city or by folks that just don’t mind what we do. Hope that helps. Jgas.

Congrats !! Another sweet pit !! Does the darker Hostetters have an applied top ?

Both have applied lips Pikes. Good to hear from you once again friend. Hope all is well with you. Jgas.

Looks like a fun time with many treasures unearthed! :occasion14:
