The first image is actually made from two pictures of the same rose taken from two different angles and with two different focal lengths of the lens. Couldn't decide on which version I liked best so I just merged them:

The second one is from a different camera.

I've owned several different digital cameras over the last 10 years - Olympus, Fuji (2 of them, both good cameras), Canon and Nikon. It seems they all have trouble with bold red colors, they just get blown out. In order to see the details in these flowers I actually had to split into RGB images, and use the Blue layer (with a bit of contrast adjustment) to create a sort of "luminance mask" to bring the reds back closer to the colors my eye saw.
