I found this 17-- Two Reale coin last weekend in what used to be the yard of a house built in 1800. An opera house was built in this location in 1910, and they are renovating and completely tore out the ground floor. The other coins found here were in remarkable shape likely due to having not been exposed to the elements.

I lightly scrubbed this with a toothbrush and water, as I normally do with silver, but this is the best I could do. Based on this, I am wondering if this is a counterfeit? The diameter is right around 25 mm, which is correct for this coin. Any thoughts on this?

does it still sound like silver when dropped on a table?

A two reale should ring up about the same a silver quarter on most machines, including the Deus. Try that test.

Considering the condition, I would scrape the edge and do an acid test on it to see if it's silver or not.

Ironic.... my son was cleaning out under his bed yesterday and brought me a 2 reale coin and said "this doesn't look like the one I found!". It appeared to be a pot-metal knock-off. I weighed it and it was about 4 grams less than what was on the internet for a 2 reale. I'm pretty sure someone bought it for him a while ago.

Weight usually tells the true story if it's size is right.

Cool find. I read that some 2 Reales in the 1820?s were very low silver content, like just 15%. I would imagine an 85% copper coin would look like yours after being buried for 150+ years. Might be what you have there.

Scrape the side, easy enough. Also, yeah, air test w your machine, and compare numbers.

Looks like a saltwater silver, or other chemical damage. Maybe a chicken coop was on top of that spot.
