Stopped in Walmart today at lunchtime to get a few items. On my way out I checked my pocket change and saw this :

Later this afternoon I went to do a short hunt at my parent's farm. Decided to detect along a fence on the side of the front yard, an area that I had not hit heavily before. Within a minute I got a mixed coin/mid-tone signal which in this yard has been indicative of brass machine parts, bullets, and buttons, as well as junk. About three inches down I pulled this out:

The front is brass, and in quite good condition. There was obviously something made of iron/steel that fit into the front piece, and has rusted away. The object is precisely 1 inch in diameter
I do not believe it is a button. Could it be an insignia that went on a rifle, holster, cap or some other piece of military equipment? This farm dates to at least the 1880's and there was Civil War activity in the area. If anyone has suggestions, please post them
Thanks for looking and HH
