I know it's a bad pic, I was zoomed in. I was almost on top of him till I noticed he was there. Anybody know what kind he is?

Interesting, I didn't know garter snakes got that big.

A couple years ago, I picked up a garter snake, the largest I had ever encountered. I measured it and it was 28" long. It was very docile and didn't try to bite me or pee on me.

Well now.... I think it's the highly elusive (thought to be extinct!) Checkerboard PA python....! You are lucky to have walked away ALIVE. Many of folks in PA have just come up missing when MDing or hiking and the checkerboard python is to blame for many of these disappearances.

But many times they're confused with the common PA. Gardner snake. Ok... I admit I made that up (Checkerboard PA python). Let's move on...! Sorry sibbley.... I had a weak moment. :tongue3:

Eastern garter snake. Garter snake is common across the country and they have all kinds of variations, but all related. And all harmless.

Much different than the garter snakes in my area. Quite a neat variety. Thanks for posting. 👍🏼
