union eagle at the lost park of Tysons Reef 1860's

In 1854 gold discovered by a man called Tyson ,who found a surfacing saddle quartz reef. After claiming the colony prize for find gold in this place . the Reef was named after him. Some of the names of people that lived in this area are quite famous.family names like Myer, Tyson, Watson were to become some of the richest families in Australian history. The gold they found was only the start, from there they built empires.

Tysons was also a divided place with the irish on the other side of creek and the Americans and the Chiness up the other side.In the main street here there is a gas works built in 1860, bakery plus large house and a tavern hotel called the Tysons.Numerous claims and mines located north to south along the reef its self.

The creek gold was worked out quite quickly like most gold rushes but the deep hard rocks mines remain until 1950's

The site i went today was behind these building.I believe this was once a park that a bridge over the creek to near by large lake that once had public baths and rowing club. All the trees in this spot are a least 140 years old and quite large.Mostly Elm and peppercorn. The bridge is lone gone but there still footings there.

Resent up grades and new constrution on the old hotel and a large pool beening put in the back yard of the once bakery ,now a a family home has left large piles of fill and theres been a mass clearing of under growth behind.
With hundres of people coming and going threw the old area for about 70 years and then just a bit of local trash dropped in this spot.I had to find some good.

Too much trash in and around the trees, so i hit the piles of clay and fill piled up in the vacant block between the bakery and the gas works.

I have sites like this to myself, local mders look for gold and care little for relics or history.Thats right no competion except for a about half a dozen bottle diggers.

Well i did not get one good coin just the usuall english and aussie pennies and half --deleted-- and a little copper clad but the buttons were a nice change. One unknown navey button, one piece 4 ?? design and what i beleive to be my first union army button.Eagle buckles have been found on the gold fields in the past but not by me.

there quite a few pics coming so i hope i have what i think is a american button

Re: union eagle at the lost park of Tysons Reef 1860's

Tinpan, I eagerly look forward to your wonderful posts. I especially appreciate your historical background stories that go along with your most amazing finds. You know where to look that's for sure. All of the poisonous animals you have to contend with out in the Bush would put me off a little, but as they say, "It's a dirty job, and somebody's got to do it!"
I guess a Rebel got fed up with the War's outcome and went to the "Land Down Under" to seek his fortune. Do you have any information about American War Between the States veterans ending up in Australia after 1865?
May you have a Happy and Lucky 2009!,
Phil
