This is a flaked and ground Munsungun chert adze.It is not the norm as Maine adzes go.It is not the usual pecked hardstone adze that I find.I have never seen another example of flaked and ground in Maine...mjm 20200101_103336.webp

Looks like they used that carefully a long time,nice shine on it. Must be a tougher chert.
 

Isn't that interesting. I wonder- was it found in a still water area or where it might have been tossed around a bit? Or did you dig it? Hard to tell from the pics if the flaking was intentional or incidental.
 

No this was dug with no water deterioration. The type of stone would not have been pecked...leaving flaking as the only means...mjm
 

Thanks for that. I just looked up that kind of chert and now have a much better understanding of what I'm looking at.
