Here we go again! By June the Senate is scheduled to vote on a proposal that will affect you and most of the earth.

Robert K. sent me an email telling about LOST, the Law of the Sea Treaty.

Here is part of what one article says about the treaty. (Use link below to access the article.)

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea ... is perhaps one of the most significant but less recognized 20th century accomplishments in the arena of international law.... Its scope is vast: it covers all ocean space, with all its uses, including navigation and overflight; all uses of all its resources, living and non-living, on the high seas, on the ocean floor and beneath, on the continental shelf and in the territorial seas; the protection of the marine environment; and basic law and order.... The Convention is widely recognised by the international community as the legal framework within which all activities in the oceans and the seas must be carried out.

Since most of the earth is covered by water, this treaty would govern most of the earth.

The article goes on to say, If you read the quote carefully, you'll see that the UN Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea which administers LOST would have authority over everything, everything, over, on, and under the oceans and seas of the world. Ratification of LOST would be a very large step toward world government. And, remember under the UN division that administers LOST, our nation wouldn't have veto power like we do in the UN Security Council. We'd have just one vote among 150 or more votes. Just as the League of Nations ultimately fell apart without the United States, let's stay out of the UN's LOST regime, thus denying its legitimacy.

Here is the link to the article.

Senate Poised to Give UN Control of Everything Re the Oceans by Ratifying LOST - John Birch Society

I could go on about the dangers and implications, but I trust that you'll see that for yourself.

If you don't want the UN having jurisdiction over everything that goes on in, over and under the water along the Treasure Coast and everywhere else, you should call or write your senator and express your views.

MODS: This belongs in the OPINIONS section and not Beach and Shallow Water.

In my opinion the JBS has grossly misrepresented LOST.

you should state your opinions on the opinion forum!!!!!!.....this should be made a sticky on all beach related forums and has a right to be here since it directly relates to beach detecting! no-one will ever see it in the opinions forum!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks for helping,
chuck.

And how would they enfoce it? Seriously! There are so many other concerns the UN is dealing with right now. A bunch of retirees with metal detectors is the last thing on their minds.lol

The UN is little more a club for foreign 'dignitaries' that don't have to pay their parking tickets on their junket to New York.

No sovereign nation will give up their power if it's in their self interest unless they're bribed otherwise.

everything that goes on in, over and under the water

I'm not sure this is Beach related.
Our shores are still our Shores

More possibly Shipwreck related.

Due to my confusion,

I will stand back at this time though & see if another Mod or administration wishes to act on this thread
.

as far as the U.s. not having veto power, daaa, this is the United nations, not the u.s.
we shouldn't have any more power then any other nation, we don't own the world.
or everyone in its minds

Some guy in a blue UN helmet tries to hassle me on an American beach and I'll stuff my can slaw down his pants and give him a wedgie.

The UN needs to be tossed out of the USA and we need to bail out of it.. bunch of wackos in my book.

thanks jeff for keeping this here! as far as being beach related, they could easily say that they have control up to the hight tide mark. alot of us are metal detectorists and shipwreck salvors so i think it applies to both. the vote is scheduled for june so well see.....

THE SKY IS FALLING,THE SKY IS FALLING.!!!

Interested parties should, as a first step, read this relatively unbiased overview of what this is really about: United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There is no sinister plot by the "United Nations" to take over anything.

[h=3]Anti-ratification arguments[/h]
  • National sovereignty: The treaty creates the International Seabed Authority (ISA) with its own dispute resolution tribunal. However, should the U.S. stop its current compliance with the U.S.-negotiated laws of the Convention, the U.S. could not be taken to the Law of the Sea Tribunal since the U.S. has indicated that it would choose binding arbitration rather than availing itself of the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea.

  • The environment: Some of the Convention's conservation provisions would provide new avenues for non-U.S. environmental organizations to affect domestic U.S. environmental policies by pursuing legal action in both US and international courts.[SUP][11][/SUP] In addition, requirements that nations either harvest their entire allowable catch in certain areas or give the surplus to other nations could result in mandated overfishing.[SUP][12][/SUP]

  • Taxation: The license fees and taxes levied on economic activities in the deep seabed area by the ISA would be, in effect, a form of 'taxation without representation'. Citizens would be indirectly taxed through business and governmental activities in the area.

  • Economics: Businesses can already exploit resources from the international area; ratifying the treaty would force them to buy licenses for that right and pay taxes on the proceeds.

  • Navigation rights not threatened: One of the treaty's main selling points, legally recognized navigation rights on, over, and under straits, is unnecessary because these rights are not currently threatened by law or by any military capable of opposing the U.S.

  • Harm to de-militarizing operations: The treaty would require all undersea ocean vessels, including submarines used for mine detection to protect ships exercising the right of innocent passage, to navigate on the surface in territorial waters to be entitled to the right of innocent passage. The operative language is identical to that contained in the 1958 Convention on the Territorial Sea and Contiguous Zone to which the U.S. is already a party.[SUP][11][/SUP]

  • Limited control over funding: The U.S. would have no direct control over how the money is used.

  • Lack of need: The U.S. already honors almost all the provisions of the treaty. For practical purposes, there is no pressing need to ratify it that outweighs the negatives of the remaining provisions.

anyone who does not mind the united nations having this much control or who agrees with the principle of giving up control to any world organizations or who thinks that they will not take advantage of some of the loose wording is completely different in their political and philisophical views than i am!
i wont argue this anymore since it just a matter of conservitive views vs liberal views. if you think this is a non issue then dont worry about it! if you think this could be bad for the united states and its citizens then please contact your senators!

Every time I start a post that hints of politics, WHAM!!!!!!!!!!!!! God Bless Chris

In case anyone's interested...here's a description of The John Birch Society: John Birch Society - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They certainly have their opinions and hopefully no one will ever attempt to quash them...but please folks...this is a metal detecting forum (isn't it?)

I have very strong opinions about America. My family includes three signers of the Declaration of Independence, four US presidents, over 100 veterans of the Revolutionary War. I really don't like it when we give up our sovereignty in a treaty that opposes the liberties provided under the Constitution of the United States. James Madison is turning over in his grave.

Treaties can only be broken... unless they have a duration that can expire on their own within a fixed time limit. There is no such thing as a repeal. I don't like the idea that the UN will dictate that we are obligated to pay a huge sum of money to be distributed among member states just because we benefit by offshore drilling. This is all about redistribution of wealth.

BTW... some areas I used to hike are closed to foot traffic thanks to the Sierra Club. Think about it.

I was born in Europe...came here at age 6 and am a naturalized American citizen now. I LOVE this country so much I doubt anyone could ever understand how much...

BUT ... after all...this is a metal Detecting forum....isn't it? Please!
