The image on the left, called a 'tughra' is a calligraphic monogram of an Ottoman sultan that was affixed to all official documents and correspondence. It was also carved on his seal and stamped on the coins minted during his reign. Each sultan had his own tughra The history of the tughra begins with the legend that an early sultan was asked to sign his name. Not knowing about the pen, he dipped him fingers into the ink and made his mark; the tughra. His middle three fingers are distinctive.
