Found metal detecting old 1800s homestead. It was about 6 inches down and was under a large root.. Any ideas? Looks like a small pot
I'm guessing one of two cap ends of a rail fixture from a wagon, and there would have been one or more open loops a metal bar would have gone through the loops.
And what you have would have held it from slipping out either end.
And the leather reigns would have draped over the whole fixture.
That is just a guess but it looks similar to reign hoops I've seen.

Kinda looks like a smelting pot (like you might melt lead in), but the handle is awful short for that.

I agree. I thought a crucible, but the short handle doesn’t seem right.
