??? Well guys finally attempted to hunt old one-room school building. Come out with a '48Jefferson, part of a little silver spoon and a couple of things of which I may never know. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Sorry about the sorry photos, the photographer was a real dummy. LOL!!!!!!!!

That looks like the filthiest Q-tip I've ever seen!

And the other thing looks like a gasket?

I dunno... :-\

thanks for looking, the gasket looking thing is made out of copper. The q-tip thing looks like a hotwheel axle or something..Don't have a clue.

After hunting lots of one-room schoolhouses, I must say I've seldom been skunked. My advice is this: Work gradually outward in widening circles around the schoolhouse as much as possible. Finding the area that the kids PLAYED is just as important or even more important than hunting around the foundation or what's left of the schoolhouse site itself. There will be old coins waiting for you, especially if the school dates to as late as the nickel suggests. Kids started having more money after WWII, and even young ones had wheaties and occasionally, SILVER. In my experience, the most common find at one-room schoolhouse playground spots are wheats. You'll know it when you get into a mess of them. (Unless the site has been hunted hard before). You might want to track down someone who went to school there and ask them where the kids played. (That spot wouldn't have changed much over the years.) That's the most direct and accurate way to get your information. At some schoolhouses the recreation spot was close to the structure itself, and other places it wasn't so close. Let us know what else you find!

Cheers!

Copper gaskets were common as recently as the 1960's. Had copper cylinder head gasket in a 250cc Harley Davidson Sprint, (think it was a 1963), made in italy.

Well it might be a crazy thing to say but when I was a kid I used to take old transformers apart to save the copper. It sort of looks like one of the plates inside an old transformer... But that was about 40 years ago. That's why I say sort of.......

Hard to tell from your pic, but the Q-tip thing could be a tie-bar. Not a tie clip, but a bar. If so, the ends come off and fit through your shirt collar. The bar goes just under the knot of your tie. Sometimes they have a little chain on them that loops around the front of the tie.

I have a picture of my grandfather as a young man wearing a tie-bar (circa 1920). I also wore one in junior high in the 70's.

Keep hunting!

I'm 2.75% sure they are parts from a clock. ;D

Well then, I'd say ask 'em if the kids tended to play in a certain area away from the school building itself. Ask all of them independently and see what they say. Then get out there! Good luck, and let us know what they say!!!

I found a very similar copper thing that I thought was a gasket for a carburator. After cleaning it I found stamped on it "R&J Clock Company , Mass."
They went out of business many years ago. I am with the other reply. I am almost sure it is clock part. However I did not find any other parts. Wes

nice finds!!!

most old schools had a fence around them for some reason I have always found the most coins around that area.

Hey Birdy,
At old one room school houses, I've had really good luck hunting the trail to the
pooper house. If you can find where the outhouse was, it was usually a fairly
straight line from the school house, and the trail usually gives up nice coins. Can you
imagine, a cold day in the winter, and your main mission after the big job, was to get
back to the warm school house... still pulling up your pants as your running towards
the school... and the coins falling out of the pockets. ;D :)

Na

I do believe it is a carburator gasket..........
