Unusual copper lid - to what?

I found this lid over the weekend. It was buried about 6 inches deep in sand along a lake in Central Florida. This is also the area where I found my 1908 Barber Quarter, so there could be some age to it. It appears to be copper. Approximately 8" long and 3" high. There are two holes in the top of the lid and two rings attached to the inside. Any ideas how this may have been used?
