Relic Hunting
If an experienced relic hunter tells you they "have a feeling" about a site,.. listen to them. Thanks to the generosity of hutsite digger, we made a nice find this past weekend. After digging out a couple hutsites he suggested moving to an area where wagons were known to have moved through carrying supplies and evacuating wounded. I must admit after about an hour of excavating a ten foot square area I had my doubts. He however was confident and persisted. We were rewarded by a very nice signal in the corner of this pit which contained a part of a Tompion, a badly bent New York coat button face, a couple large rivets and the best part of all, a tourniquet buckle with "Kolby" stamped in the side. I was able to find a page from an old surgery text which clearly shows how it was used! I am very grateful to hutsite digger and hope to have an opportunity to repay his generosity:notworthy:

Cool find! I guess it's a lot like fishing...what if I had cast just ONE more time...;)

I was beginning to wonder if you guys had any luck over the weekend. Great finds! I'm sure we'll do some hunting together in the future. :occasion14:

Interesting find, congrats!!!

Very cool finds DV!!! I believe HSD has quite a bit of hunting experience. HH, Q.

Hey it was good getting up with you Sunday digger I was getting a little worried after digging for an hour and getting nothing but flecks of iron signals in the pit we was digging that it may be a bust but from my experience artifacts are always found right before you call it a quits, just gotta put the last minute effort into it.... I think our next outing we need to hit up this confederate lookout spot in Spotsylvania near the river that produced some good finds in the early 2000s it's so off the beaten path and up on a hill that know one else from what I know is found that spot and there is no union relics in this spot, so we can get a tad bit more serious when it comes to the confederate relics. Hope to talk to you again and we will head out before the warm weather comes around and it's starting to get dark a little later so we can get an extra hour or two out of hunting.:occasion14:

On a side note with that tourniquet it was more of less used on one of the soldiers that was in the Battle Of Aquia Creek the spot we dug it in was a road leading from the Potomac Creek thru the woods and up too the Potomac River and the wagons had to stop @ that wagon pit because they got stuck in the mud so they had to unload the wounded soldiers @ that spot and dig out there wagons then continue up to the Potomac River where the hospital was. During the battle of aquia creek many soldiers got hurt from the artillery shells that were flying around for two days in 1861 during the Aquia Creek battle so more of less it may have been the tourniquet was used in that spot for a soldier that got delayed from getting up to the hospital due to the wagons being stuck and a surgeon amputated the soldier right there. Kinda hard to image but that was life back then!

I would nominate something like THIS as a banner find over say, a gold coin or some jewelry.

This probably has quite a story and is an item that is a part of history.

An Awesome group of relics I echo the banner nom.. becaouse ,digging C.W.relics always makes me think back to a time when some of the most Patriotic Citizen's both North and South fought for the America they believed in & the sacrifices they made for the love of GOD & Country. Also makes me see just how lazy ME and many in this great country of ours have become. Sounds like you guy's put in the hard work of research and recovery ,and were rewarded with a great piece of history. thank yall for letting us see. Davers

banner would be pretty cool......

banner would be pretty cool......

:camera:.. Maybe when we dig that Virginia two piece we can get that banner find... This is a first tourniquet i seen come outta the ground though and as you know I have hunted civil war hospital sites hardcore and never dug one but basically from 1861 to 1863 there were make shift hospitals setup in Stafford by the 100s.. Lot of several medical tools, drill type devices, bullets with bite marks can be found anywhere. i will go back to the spot in a few days and see maybe if there is more relics deep in the ground in that area.
