Found a large flat button today. About the size of a silver dollar with a "waffle iron" design on the front. Also gold plated. Seems very old. Is there any way to date these things?

Referred to as "dandy" buttons, popular with gentlemen at the end of the 1700s and early 1800s

have found a few of those exact buttons... as IH said,"dandy" buttons

Thanks for all the replies. This thing is definitely a dandy button. Had a great day detecting. In addition to the button I found an 1870 2 cent piece, some sort of trade token dated 1860, a 1924 wheatie, a modern dime and a modern quarter. This was a spur of the moment trip to a friend of mine's old plantation house. Only detected for about 2 hrs; lots more territory to cover and I've been invited to return at my pleasure. Hot damn.

Post a picture of the back of it.. Does it have a back-mark or not?

Excellent first day at that site - WOW :notworthy: With such a fine start, you'll be posting more good finds soon! HAVE FUN! Andi

No discernable backmark.
