Up the Creek- Iron Man....

I was metal detecting the creek today and came up with this signal in the 30s.. strange.. must be something other than iron.
It looks iron..but must be made of an alloy.
Anyway, its a bit rusty.. Anyone know how to preserve it? Give it an oil rubdown?
Name on it says L.W. Christensen
the bottom is marked "Merchandise Mart Chicago"

I think it says "Vandy-Craft"
I think... and from what little I found, that was a furniture/fixture company located in the Chicago area.
