update on gold filled items

I recently recommended to look for gold filled items at garage sales. I found 9 this last weekend.

Look for old glasses I found 7 and bargained down to $1 each. They were marked on the nose piece 1/10 12K GF

I also found a watch with a spidel twist band, after careful looking with magnifying glass I saw "band caps 1/20 12K GF" paid $1 it was an ordinary looking junky watch.

I found an older ladies watch that said "band caps 1/20 12K GF" and "bezel 1/20 12K RGP" I paid $3 but it is only worth $1.68

All said I paid $11 and gold value about $48

other things to look for are old fountain pens

So from now on I will only pay one dollar for anything marked GF
people think because it is old it is worth lots of money
tell them you know the value and no one else will pay more

e.g. 15 grams 12K 1/20 gold filled (gold@$950oz)
full gold value would be $229
gold filled value would be $11.45

I try to buy GF at around 25¢ to 50¢ each. I point out that it does have some gold value but it is still costume jewelry. (also look at old glasses frames)
My refiner wants a minimum or 500 grams before he will accept a batch. That is only 16 troy ounces. (500gr 12K 1/20 GF = about $380)."

Where have I seen piles and piles of old glasses?

thrift stores and goodwill type stores
people donate them and what are the chances of them actually working on someone?
There are dozens of those type of stores around where I live.

lets see now. a ton is 2000 pounds and at 12 troy per pound that is 24000 ounces and if it is all 1/20 12K at todays price you hoard is worth $593,459.99

GF = gold filled
HGE = heavy gold electroplate

with GF you have a pretty good idea of gold content
with HGE it is just gold plated, no telling how thick

to me GF is the way to go

probably none, go to a store where you can make and bake ceramics. price out a bottle of "gold" ceramic paint. you can do a lot of plates with that bottle.
