UPDATED:The Eagle has landed..The Flyin' Eagle!!Another first for Bootstrap
FINALLY!! I finally got my Flying Eagle cent!!! Oh,excuse me,Hello everyone,I'm still goin' off here.Never thought I'd find one but I did it today. This story may be a little long but in the end it may give some of you a new prospect.I live in Maine as some of you know and we have a local lake which some of us locals refer to as sonastycook, its real name is Sabasticook. It has the distinction of being the largest lake in Maine being completely contained in one town.It also is the home of the oldest native American fish weir in North America. The lake is so dirty from the camps that "use" to drain sewerage into it and the mills that used to operate along the shore that they have to do an annual draw down on it to try to clean it up.There is a certain area along the shore that was used by trappers for who knows how long.My dad found the spot a few years ago and had pretty good luck so I went with him last year and had some luck too.So it is that time of year again and time to go as the draw-down is on.Its really quite comical as it's about 1-1/2 miles down a four wheeler trail to the area. With one four wheeler, three guys(uncle Vinn always joins us)and three detectors strapped across the back it must be quite a site!We get to the site and I start swingin' my trusty old machine (Old Hoagie) and bang!My first hit,an 1858 flying eagle cent!!!I just about came unglued!!Jumpin' up and down like a school kid and doin' the "YES" and the single and double fist pump and all that!Shut my detector off sat down for a minute, had a smoke and reveled in my accomplishment, this is gonna be a good day.A few minutes later my dad hollas Spanish Reale!!! I ran over and sure enough a beautiful 1782 Carolus III 1 reale!!!Excellent condition but holed.Wowww whats next? This area is loaded with shot and shells and fishin' tackle and misc. debris so if your running low discrimination there is no shortage of signals. To try to make a long story short we ended up with a 179? LC,a 1782 1 reale Spanish silver,an 18? IHP,Fatty 1863 IHP,1870 1882 1889 and 1865 IHP,a 1906 V nickle '43P silver nickle, various clad,a nice fossilized rock and the star of the show an 1858 Flying Eagle Cent!!I don't know how many of you have ever found one of these, but they have always been on my "to find" list and never thought I would. It's only worth about $20 because it's not in the greatest shape but it's a priceless first to me and a first for anyone I know personally.Anyway, it was a great day, although my butt's a little sore form riding on the gear rack of the wheeler.Keep your eyes and ears open,if you can find a draw-down like this in your area you just may snag up some old goodies like this too!!Thanks for reading my long story and HH,Bootstrap
