It appears to be a Coronet, or Liberty Head, U.S. $1 gold coin. Check for a mintmark— a tiny letter beneath the wreath on the back of the coin. If there is a "C," it was struck at the mint in Charlotte, North Carolina; if there is a "D," it is from Dahlonega, Georgia; if there is an "O," it is from New Orleans, Louisiana. Coins without a mintmark are from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Value of the coin will depend on whether it was damaged in order to mount it into the ring, and on its overall condition due to wear, scratches, etc. Here are the U.S. $ values for this coin in Very Fine condition:

1851 (no mintmark) — $160

1851-C — $1,200

1851-D — $,1600

1851-O — $175

Here is a link to more information about U.S. gold $1 coins:
